Garden Mums
Day 13: A Year and a Day from My Garden
I have never grown chrysanthemums before. Last October I ordered a small collection from Sunstac Nurseries and have been very curious to see how they would do here.
The varieties I chose were:
Chiffon Pink
Alexis
Luxor
Carillion
Rose Patricia Millar
Mavis
Muriel

They are now beginning to flower, and I am still not entirely sure what I think of them.
Some seem floppy and in need of staking, and many of the stems are shorter than I had imagined. I suspect much of that comes down to my growing methods rather than the plants themselves.
Perhaps chrysanthemums are one of those flowers that improve in their second year once established. Or perhaps they are simply not something I will fall in love with.
Still, I plan to cut a bouquet for the house this week before making up my mind. Sometimes flowers reveal themselves differently once indoors.
Mother’s Day is not one of my favourite days of the year. Lots of feelings surface loss, abandonment, rejection, but also joy and thankfulness. It can be a very emotional day.
Our daughter and dear husband know this and always treat me with great care and love. I am lucky with these two indeed!
These beautiful rose and lemon tea cakes were made by our daughter Recipe from Sinxy Kitchen Gluten free! I cooked a “Green Meadows Beef” Mother’s Day slow-cooked bolar roast, which honestly cracked me up. A Mother’s Day meat pack! I completely fell for the marketing and bought one.
I am not naturally a huge meat eater, though am trying to eat more protein these days.
This, I think, is part of the pleasure of gardening and perhaps life too. One gets to experiment, change direction, and occasionally surprise oneself.
